Pitt McGehee Palmer Bonanni & Rivers’ Kevin Carlson Alleges Over-Detentions Are Wayne County’s “Worst-Kept Secret”  

Pitt McGehee Palmer Bonanni & Rivers represents individuals who were unlawfully held in Wayne County Jail beyond their court-ordered release dates in West-Campeau v. Dunlap. The case highlights the operational and administrative chaos at the Wayne County facility, which was exacerbated by a cyberattack in October 2024. The plaintiffs allege that delays in processing their release, especially when tether units were unavailable, led to unnecessary prolonged detentions. Firm Partner Kevin Carlson recently argued that these over-detentions violated detainees' constitutional rights. 

"It's kind of the worst-kept secret in Wayne County. Given how long it's been going on, it's not unrealistic to say it's happened to hundreds, if not thousands, of people. Five or more days is unreasonable under any circumstances,” Kevin said in court.
