Cary McGehee Receives Distinguished Alumnus Award at the 12th Annual BGSU Ziggys

Founding Partner Cary McGehee was honored as the Distinguished Alumna at the 12th Annual Ziggys, Bowling Green State University's end-of-year celebration of student-athlete achievement, held April 22 at the Stroh Center.

McGehee played women's basketball for the Falcons from 1980 to 1984, beginning her collegiate career as a walk-on before earning a scholarship. In her final season, she earned the team's Most Valuable Player and Best Defensive Player awards, was selected to the All-MAC Second Team, and eclipsed 1,000 career points. After Bowling Green, she went on to win the first and only championship of the Women's American Basketball Association with the Dallas Diamonds in the 1984-1985 season.

She later pursued law at her father's encouragement, eventually co-founding Pitt McGehee Palmer Bonanni & Rivers. Over more than three decades, she has become one of Michigan's foremost civil rights attorneys, with her fingerprints on some of the state's most significant settlements, including her co-lead role in the $624 million Flint Water Crisis settlement.

At the ceremony, McGehee spoke to the current group of student-athletes about her life experiences. Her message reflected the same values she carried from the court into the courtroom: "You've been successful as an athlete because of your passion; you'll no doubt be successful in the career that you choose if it's something you're passionate about."
