Disability Rights

Fair, equitable treatment for all.

Your landlord refuses to make reasonable accommodations for your disability. You’re paid differently than non-disabled coworkers. You’re fired because a new manager doesn’t want to “deal with you.” If you’re denied the same treatment and opportunities as others, you’re facing disability discrimination.

It’s illegal to discriminate against qualified workers with any medical condition or physical, sensory or mental impairment, no matter how mild or severe. Your employer has an obligation to find a solution to meet your needs. It’s also unlawful to refuse to allow you to live with your service or support animal, even if your building has a “no pets” policy.

Disability discrimination is an important focus of our firm. We’ve fought on behalf of disabled individuals for nearly 30 years. We have addressed disability discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations. We have written some of the Michigan treatises widely used to help people with disabilities seek justice.

We’ve successfully negotiated to help individuals keep their jobs and their homes, find solutions to accommodate their workplace needs and win compensation for economic and emotional losses when an employee has been terminated, or denied employment, due to their disability, or when a tenant or condo owner has been denied the accommodations or modifications needed to have an equal opportunity to enjoy their homes.

Results for our clients:

  • $350,000 for a paraplegic employee who was unlawfully terminated for needing intermittent medical leave to address the side effects of his condition.

  • $325,000 settlement from an apartment complex that evicted individuals who were participating in a substance use disorder treatment program.

  • Reinstatement of employment for a woman who lost her job after she started using a wheelchair.
