Civil Rights & Police Misconduct

Calling on the Constitution to defend your rights.

You’re treated with excessive force by the police at a peaceful Black Lives Matter rally. A family member is being abused in prison. Your city government disregards your safety. If a state, city or public entity denies you the equal protections outlined in the U.S. Constitution, your civil rights have been violated.

Although the Constitution guarantees every American citizen certain civil rights and personal liberties regardless of race, gender, ethnicity and other factors, defending these rights can be complicated. State and local governments are granted certain immunities, and they’re experienced in creating barriers and delays. We have zero tolerance for any violation of fair treatment and will do all we can to seek compensation for any injustice you’ve suffered.

As Michigan’s leading civil rights law firm, we draw on an extensive understanding of government procedures and practices to develop creative, effective strategies. We treat our clients with compassion and understanding. And sometimes, our efforts are so effective, they redefine policies to greater protect Michigan civil rights.

We start with in-depth investigating. Civil rights cases hinge on understanding your case and uncovering the facts that reveal what really happened. You don’t get that from reading a police report or skimming over the facts. It comes from exhaustive attention to the details and finding where the discrepancies lie to successfully advocate for your rights.

We also try to settle out of court. It offers the most leverage in seeking the greatest results for you. It also spares you the emotional anguish of a trial. If your case does move to trial, we have extensive experience litigating in court. You won’t have to hire an additional lawyer to represent you. And because you may also be charged with wrongdoing, resisting arrest for example, you may also need a criminal lawyer. We can help with that, too.

The size of the case doesn’t matter. Our mission is bringing justice to people who’ve been wronged by entities that are supposed to protect them.

Our fairness extends to our fees. Nearly all civil rights cases are based on a contingency fee, which means you don’t pay for our services unless there’s a settlement or judgment in your favor. We will discuss this with you upfront and speak with complete transparency.

If you think your rights have been violated, seek the advice of an attorney sooner rather than later – when you feel something isn’t right. Don’t try to take matters in your own hands or wait until things fall apart. And document what’s going on, keeping your documentation at home, on your own computer.

In the case of criminal charges, talk to an attorney as soon as possible, before you say or do anything, including giving a statement to the police. An attorney can advise you on handling these situations in a way that protects your rights.

Founding partners Michael Pitt and Cary McGehee have led our firm’s civil rights cases from the start, and they are joined by all of us in the pursuit of justice when government actors violated your constitutional rights. Partners Beth Rivers, Jennifer Lord, Kevin Carlson, and Robin Wagner have played key roles in a number of our key cases.
