Partner Channing Robinson-Homes Quoted in MLive Article on Recent Ruling in Huron Valley Correctional Facility Case

A federal judge recently ruled that Michigan’s prison system cannot claim qualified immunity in a class action lawsuit over dangerous conditions at Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility. The suit alleges the state has failed to address widespread mold and deterioration inside Michigan’s only women’s prison.

Partner Channing Robinson-Holmes provided her insights on the ruling to MLive, stating: “The court’s ruling significantly holds that inmates have a clearly established right to be free from toxic environmental substances that pose an unreasonable risk of harm. The ruling signals to the State of Michigan that the conditions at (the facility) are unconstitutional and must be remedied.”

She further stated, “Prison conditions are a fundamental human rights issue. A prison sentence does not translate to deplorable, inhumane, unhealthy living conditions and resultant harms.”
