McGehee and MCHR Prepare for Freedom Tour

From the Detroit Free Press Two dozen students wielded rakes, brooms and garbage bags Saturday as they cleaned up Viola Liuzzo Park in northwest Detroit. The group plans to travel in June to the Deep South, then spend a week touring sites of civil rights history including one that memorializes Liuzzo's tragic death in 1965. Liuzzo, a Detroit wife, mother of five and member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church, was moved to act after seeing civil rights protests on television, then was assassinated in 1965 by members of the Ku Klux Klan in Alabama. Sponsoring the trip, dubbed the Freedom Tour, is the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights. The nonprofit group sponsored a trip in 2013 and now hopes to repeat its success with a fresh batch of 26 civic-minded students chosen from across metro Detroit, said the group's board chair Cary McGehee, a lawyer in Royal Oak. "We've got a good mix of students --- black, white, Arab, Latino, biracial (and) from different socioeconomic backgrounds. They'll find out that, no matter how different they are, they have a lot in common," McGehee said. Read the Entire Story Here
