Lord Cited by WXYZ 7 and Detroit Free Press in Spranger Ethics Hearing Coverage

April 19, 2017 Both the Detroit Free Press and WXYZ 7 continued coverage reporting on a former top aide to embattled Macomb County Clerk/Register of Deeds Karen Spranger, who told a county ethics board today that he has heard her refer to her employees as her "enemies" and painted her as a detached leader who created an atmosphere of fear in the short time she has headed the two county departments. Paul Kardasz, one of two deputies Spranger fired months after appointing them, also told the board that Spranger said that "there was no law that said she had to talk to any of us. She said that the psychology of her politics is different." He and Deputy Register of Deeds Erin Stahl were fired by Spranger after filing the ethics complaints being heard by the board. The pair, who were appointed by Spranger as her top deputies when she took office on Jan. 1, have filed a federal whistle-blower lawsuit against her over their terminations. Lord, who is representing Stahl and Kardasz in the whistle-blower lawsuit, said Spranger "mismanaged the office." She said Spranger had a history of showing up 45 minutes late for meetings, leaving 45 minutes early and falling asleep in crucial meetings with outside vendors and during a clerks' meeting in another county Earlier this week, the Free Press reported that Spranger filed a sheriff's office complaint after she ducked into a restroom to avoid a TV reporter, and that her new deputy register of deeds called 911 twice to report Spranger didn't feel well, that she felt "harassed" and wanted "reporters to stop asking her questions" about problems in her office. Lord said that Spranger "had a history of running and hiding in the bathroom" if there was a critical situation. "You have to be competent and have to do the job," Lord said You can read the entire Detroit Free Press article here. You can see the WXYZ 7 report here.
