Pitt, McGehee, Palmer, Rivers & Golden, P.C.'s Community Service Program furthers the principles on which the firm was founded by encouraging employees through paid time-off to participate in community service and become more active and dedicated to improving their community.
The Community Service Committee contacts local community organizations searching for different ways in which the firm can offer volunteer services and organize group events. The official name of the firm's volunteers is "The Pitt Crew".
Habitat for Humanity
In May of 2008, The Pitt Crew completed its first project working for Habitat for Humanity. Seven volunteers from the office helped build a family home on the east side of Detroit. Cary McGehee, Megan Bonanni, Kathy Chisholm, Vanessa Gray, April Deplae, Kevin Carlson and Linda Benns and their spouses participated in this community service project.
Vista Maria
In June of 2008, The Pitt Crew collected toiletries for the girls at Vista Maria, an organization dedicated to providing a safe and nurturing environment for girls who have been abused or neglected.
Earth Grows- Capuchin Soup Kitchen
In August of 2008, The Pitt Crew participated in Earth Works which is associated with the Capuchin Soup Kitchen located at 1264 Meldrum in Detroit. Volunteer jobs include planting, weeding, and harvesting vegetables and fruits grown in harmony with nature to be used to prepare meals for the soup kitchen. Megan Bonanni and Cary McGehee spent one-half day pulling weeds and picking grapes. It was a great time helping to build a just and beautiful food system with Earthworks.
Manna Community Meals Soup Kitchen
In September of 2009, The Pitt Crew worked at Manna Community Meals Soup Kitchen located at St. Peters Church in Detroit. On September 22 and 23rd Linda Benns, Dan Benns, Pat Giroux, Elaine Hesano Dennis Hesano, Cary McGehee, Bob Palmer, Kevin Carlson, Kathy Chisholm, John Chisholm, and April Deplae worked at the soup kitchen preparing and serving food and cleaning up. Each day we serviced more than 250 people from 8:00 to 11:00 in the morning. It was an eye opening and rewarding experience.
Capuchin Soup Kitchen
In October of 2009, The Pitt Crew in association with the Association of Legal Administrators, collected food and toiletries for the Capuchin Soup Kitchen.
Detroit Free Press Flagstar Marathon- Run for Habitat for Humanity
On October 18, 2009, The Pitt Crew participated in the Detroit Free Press Flagstar Marathon and raised over $3,000 for Habitat for Humanity. Cary McGehee ran a half marathon. Beth Rivers and her daughter Rebecca, Kathy Chisholm and her husband John and daughter Trish, Dorthea Duncan and her sons Richard and Alvin participated in the 5K walk/run. The group enjoyed breakfast at Pronto after the exhausting but exhilarating event.
Christmas for a Family
In December of 2009, the Pitt Crew donated Christmas dinner and presents to a local family who was financially struggling.
Random Acts of Shoe-ness
In October of 2010, the Pitt Crew donated shoes to an international adoption agency in Hawaii called Hawaii International Child. The agency travels to South Africa every 8 weeks and brings suitcases of shoes which are passed out to school children.
Manna Community Meals Soup Kitchen
The Pitt Crew is currently scheduled to work again at the Manna Community Meals Soup Kitchen in November, 2010.
In December of 2010, the Pitt Crew donated Christmas presents to a local family who was financially struggling. Alex, 21/2 years old and a patient at Beaumont Hospital Center for Childrens Rehabilitation, has spina bifida. He is a twin and also has an older sister who is 7.
